Fasted Cardio-who will/won’t benefit
To lose body fat, a lot of people do fasted cardio, which is doing a cardiovascular workout shortly after waking, without eating or drinking anything with calories. For some people, this results in fat loss, but not for others. If you’re sluggish and cannot complete an intense cardio workout without eating, then fasted cardio is not for you. I cannot do fasted intense exercise of any kind without eating carbs prior to because I’m a type 1 diabetic, and the background insulin I take plummets my blood sugar and makes me dizzy, sometimes in as little as 15 minutes.
If you can workout harder with a little food in your belly, then eat before your workout like I do. If you wake up starving, but don’t allow yourself to eat before your cardio, then you’re doing yourself a double disservice. When your body signals for you to eat, it means you’re hungry and if you don’t eat soon, your body signals it to lower your metabolism (1). If your metabolism is slowed down, then it’s adjusted your caloric intake so you have to eat even less to lose weight.
If you don’t wake up hungry and can put in 100% in a workout without eating and are using this method to burn off fat, then do it. Remember that what works for one person, may not work for another.
