My favorite dark chocolate is Enjoy Live Boom Choco Boom Bar. It is dairy, nut, soy and gluten free. A square will satisfy any chocolate craving and only 57 calories, not bad. The best time to eat this chocolate is in the summer when it’s warm, keep in the cupboard at room temperature. It the winter it doesn’t melt in your mouth and tastes completely different. You can always melt it in the microwave and drizzle over a frozen banana, yum!
It’s really hard to replicate a fattening dessert that has butter, milk, flour and sugar but Earth Café found the right combination that’s raw, vegan, dairy-free and super close to the real thing. Their cheesecakes are delicious. My favorite is raspberry. The carob is a bit too sweet and the crust too salty. I contact them to see if they can make the chocolate with less agave and cut back on the salt. I’ll also ask them to put the carob into pudding cups…yum. I don’t even like carob, but theirs tastes like real chocolate.
This morning I tried Vanilla Bean Plant Fusion protein powder. It’s dairy-free, soy-free, gluten-free and, has “amazing taste” listed on the front of the package. Kind of a lot of calories for a protein powder, 120, but lots of protein 21g and 4 grams of carbs which is not bad. As for “amazing taste,” it has no taste and the texture of chalk. I know there are people out there who eat chalk, but I am not one of them. I’ll keep looking for a vegan protein powder!
There is so much hype about how bad wheat pasta is because we eat it excessively (every day), the soils are so depleted, gluten is bad for your health, pasta/wheat/gluten makes you fat…etc. If you don’t have an issue with gluten or wheat and eat it once in a while, then I think it’s fine. If you omit something entirely from your diet then there is a chance that you are going to have nutritional deficiencies. Even so, I do think our society eats much too much wheat products: pasta, bread, pretzels, bagels, tortillas, etc. I’ve decided to cut back on wheat so I’ve tried different products. The latest vegan and gluten-free pastas I’ve tried are Organic Mung Bean Fettuccini and Organic Black Bean Spaghetti; they were over $4.00 for a 7.05 ounce package, and sound like healthier options: “rich in protein and dietary fibers”. I followed the cooking instructions exactly and was totally bummed out by the non-existent flavor and wet-paper texture. I’m going to ask the store for a refund. No store should carry products that taste terrible!
Pills to reduce or eliminate pain from eating various foods have different ingredients, some work and some don’t. Gaia has a good one, but it doesn’t work 100% of the time. My friend Corey recommended a brand he uses, but after reading the ingredient list, I wasn’t sure if I could have it since I’m allergic to milk and it has lactase. I know this is an enzyme to help people break down milk sugar, but I don’t consume any milk, and don’t need lactase. (I really need a cure for the milk allergy!). I contacted the company and they said it shouldn’t be a problem. I researched on the web and found nothing specific enough. I called my allergist and he said there is no milk protein in lactase, therefore, I will not have an allergic reaction to it. Fabulous, but what is it derived from? He said, most likely it is created in a lab, from fungus. Okay so I can have it, but now I have to get over how gross that is!
I found out that Ralphs took off my favorite dairy-free/vegan yogurt off the shelves permanently. I went to other stores and couldn’t find Whole Soy and Co Soy yogurts; they stopped making their product when the old facility closed. They are in their new facility now so we should see their products soon. The vanilla and lemon Organic Whole Soy Yogurts are my favorite.
In the meantime, I’ve been trying to find a vegan yogurt without the soy and am trying the SoDelicious dairy and soy free. The plain and raspberry are decent, the vanilla is kind of weird and the chocolate is disgusting. I threw away the chocolate. Strawberry is delicious and will buy that flavor again. When I try the others, I’ll let you know if they are any good.
For breakfast this morning, made a green juice with 1 bunch of kale, 1 head of romaine lettuce, 2 carrots and 1 knob of ginger in my juicer. Then blended it with coconut water and protein powder. It was absolutely disgusting! Ate all the apples so I didn’t have it to juice. If you have a good green, low carb recipe, let me know. So far, anything with blended greens makes me gag.
Third day taking GoBean Green Coffee Bean pills and this caffeine pill definitely has given me much more energy. Did a one hour legs workout with the trainer and did two of Jillian Michael’s cardio kickboxing workouts with energy to spare. Can’t wait to find out how fast and far I can hike!
